ART HIST 3AA3: Robert Hughes on Contemporary Art & Collecting Practice

ART HIST 3AA3: More Fischli and Weiss

In the early 1980s the artists Fischli and Weiss (see entry below) made two films in which they assumed the roles of two characters, Rat and Bear. The first of these films, The Least Resistance (1981) set the characters in Los Angeles (where Fischli and Weiss were living at the time) while the second film, The Right Way (1982-83) presented the characters in a sublime wilderness setting. In each film the characters attempt to wrestle with existentialist questions. A book titled Order and Cleanliness (1981) continued this thread by presenting the ideas of Rat and Bear as they attempt to make order out of the world.

During our last lecture (Friday Feb., ) we viewed part of the short film "Der Lauf der Dinge" ("The Way Things Go", 1987) which survives as a document of the installation work of the same title by the Swiss artists Peter Fischli and David Weiss.  Here is a link to the full film:
