Please note that the reading for next week (Monday Oct. 15) is currently available in the SOTA office. Two copies have been placed in the 4E03 box beneath the marked proposals. As with the previous readings please borrow and return promptly to ensure that others in the class can read (and / or copy) in a timely fashion. The reading is Ch. 7 "Inventing the Collector" from Paula Findlen's Possessing Nature.
There are two questions that I would ask you to consider for Monday's discussion of this reading:
1) What, according to Findlen, were the key motives and benefits behind the practice of collecting in early modern Europe?
2) In the course of her discussion Findlen talks about chameleons. Why does she mention them and how are they relevant to our understanding of collectors and collecting practice?
