During our last class I was asked if it was possible to give a sample question in anticipation of the exam. Parts 1 and 2 are the same in format (30 minutes each) though they will each deal with different periods and styles (as indicated in my previous 'exam' post). The following is an example of a question that might fit into the format for Parts 1 and 2:
Q: What defines a work as 'Rococo'? Use at least one example of work from the lectures or readings to illustrate your comments.
Part 3 is broader in scope by virtue of the fact that it will involve comparison and contrast. So... you can expect a question treating an issue relevant to modern (19th-20th century) art but one that will require explanation by recourse to comparative examples from the modern age and (if you choose) earlier periods.

ART HIST 1AA3: Notes and Info for Final Exam
My apologies for the slight delay in getting this post up and and running. The final exam for ART HIST 1AA3 is scheduled for Wednesday August 7 (6-8 pm., TSH B106 - our regular lecture room).
As noted during our last class the exam will be divided into three parts. The following is a recap of my comments in class pertaining to the details of each part:
Part 1 will consist of a single question pertaining to the art and architecture of the Baroque. You will not be presented with a question on any specific work. Rather, you will have a question which will ask you to address qualities or ideas associated with Baroque art and architecture. Your response will require you to show your understanding of those qualities or ideas ideas by demonstration through an appropriate work of your choice. I strongly recommend that you prepare for yourself a shortlist of Baroque works so that you will have examples to use from memory when you come to write your response. As always, you will NEED to identify the artist or architect, title and date(s) for any works referenced. You will be asked to use AT LEAST one example in your response but use of several examples may be beneficial in explaining your thoughts with more depth.
You will be required to use full sentences in your response. Part 1 will have a duration of 30 minutes.
Part 2 will consist of a single question pertaining to the art and architecture of the 18th century. Check the styles and issues associated with the art of this period and be prepared to respond to a question addressing the qualities or issues connected with one of those styles (and, no, I'm telling you what the styles are here - I've done that in class :) ). The same advice given for part 1 (above) applies here. Have examples ready. You can pull examples from your text or the lectures. Use the internet if you need to... it can be a great resource!
You will be required to use full sentences in your response. Part 2 will have a duration of 30 minutes.

The response time for this question (see below) will be greater than part 1 or part 2 as the question will be broader in scope and will necessitate a variety of examples to illustrate points. To prepare for this question I recommend that you pull together a short list of works from the modern period indicated above along with some examples of classical (or 'classicizing') work treated earlier in the course. These may prove helpful if you compare and contrast works in your response (a recommended strategy for illustrating points). Since the question will be asking you to discuss issues pertaining to modern art of the 19th - early 20th centuries it is strongly recommended that you have a short list of works representing different styles and movements of the period (again, I've discussed these in class and they are noted in your text so please do not send me emails asking me to tell you what they are).
You will be required to use full sentences in your response. Part 3 will have a duration of 60 minutes.
